Renqian Yang

ArtAscent Artist of the Red call for artists

Wandering along the contours of Chinese society with millions of fellow graduates in 2009, artist Renqian Yang absorbed all the anxieties and demur of being one of “the ant tribe” comrades. The experience has left her profoundly torn between constraints of traditional environment and the liberty she sought after, channeling her creativity toward making a poignant body of work molded from her history, dreams, desires and anguish. Mario Tofano

Fellow Travelers

A boy 17 revolutions old walked into the public library. It was about midday and he often skipped the last hours of class to read. He had been captured many times by the police for truancy…

In the eponymous short story written by Mario Tofano, the term describes a young teenager with a passionate soul and an overwhelming innate spite for the system, and the invisible leader the boy is inevitably drawn to. Throughout the narrative “Fellow Travelers,” Mario overtly alludes to the revolution by painting the description into symbolic colour. Fascinated by the thrilling terror induced by the aesthetics typical of the genre of horror, Katlyn Nemo engages herself in an elaborate creative process, forming her own visions of universally known frightful myths. Her demonic figures are built upon the classical depictions of eerie archetypes – endowed with a very specific quality – found throughout Katlyn’s work. Eric Field

ArtAscent Artist of the Red call for artists
His work is predominantly graphic, Eric Field does not shy away from colour; he most frequently opts for red. The vivid explanation he offers for his choice comes in the form of a short narrative reminiscing on the lesson of a teacher who “once suggested that, if used skillfully, the three classic chalks – black, white, and red – could effectively create the impression of a full range of hues and tones.” Eric Field is the Bronze Artist of the ArtAscent “Red” call for artists. Reject Embrace Defy

Rethinking every decision, has become a way of life; I’ve turned the pages many times finding only strife. Errors in my choices are reminders of the past. How long have I sat here? How long will it last? Damnation is what awaits me, if I go outside; instead…

Red in Three Movements

Green and thin as the corn was then
we chased the impossible hare, smudged
the fine calligraphy of the fields, snatched
from downy stems the furled and sleeping heads, bet
Priest! or Nun! then tore the membranes open,
shrieking in scissored voices…
