Connecting spring with flowers might be the most common association we have. Yet, as Leanne Trivett S. proves, artists continue—under inspiration by spring’s floral beauty—creating new visual explorations of blooms.
Flowers and plants, in general, have always been essential subjects in the history of photography. It’s enough to mention the British photographer like Anna Atkins (1799-1871), the author of the first photography book British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions (1843), which featured the cameraless images of aquatic organisms. German photographer Karl Blossfeldt (1865-1932) is probably the most iconic master who worked with floral motifs. However, the interest in it continues even today. Harold Davis (born 1953) is extensively referring to the depiction of flowers wholly based on digital technology, similar to the artistic experiments of Leanne Trivett S.
While Davis embraces digital techniques, Trivette prefers to work with various media, forging connections with different art forms. Trivette utilizes graphic editing software, such as Photoshop, to manipulate her image. The artist imbues them with the appearance of watercolours (Summer’s Lollipops), batik silk paintings (Waking in the Sun 2), or abstract oil paintings (Drops of the Sun), imitating the flow of pigment, blurriness of the outlines or even brushwork. The transformative process is so profound that viewers often lose sight of the fact that they are observing photographs. Warm yellow and pink hues dominate her images’ vibrant colour palette. These colours resonate with the telling titles of her works, collectively fostering an atmosphere of rejuvenation and the vibrant spirit of spring.
Leanne Trivett S. is a U.S. visual artist who utilizes her photographs to delve into the realms of experimental self-portraiture and florals. She holds a BFA in Theatre from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University in NY, New York, U.S. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at venues such as the Los Angeles Centre for Photography, the Griffin Museum of Photography in Boston, and the PH21 Gallery in Budapest, Hungary. Her artistic endeavours have also been featured in Dodho in Barcelona, Spain, for the Monochrome Awards and the Colour Awards 2022, Black & White Magazine, and various special edition exhibition catalogues. Leanne received Honourable Mention for The 18th Annual Julia Margaret Cameron Award for Women Photographers in 2022 across three categories. She also secured second place in the People and Portraits category for Digital Photo 2022 and received an honourable mention in the ND Awards. She shares her experience through teaching engagements at such institutions as Sante Fe Workshops, SEC4P, and the Chicago Botanic Garden, U.S. Her studio is located near Asheville, North Caroline, U.S.
