These images embrace the idea of turning points, escape, and confinement, exploring conceptually ideas about the change in a woman’s place in modern society. These portals (paths) show points of departure: marrying the disturbance, leaving the box, or staying and learning to redefine it – each an option on its own.

The added element of shooting in gowns lent itself to a more female-driven message — one of strength in beauty, but also an added foil the movement in each pose. These women do not sit still and look pretty, rather they convey a message of action and choice, and in most images a dominance of their surroundings.

Portals (Passages) examines these ideals of the move toward existing out-of-bounds through conceptual means using these dramatically lit visuals as a means of communication.

About My Work

My works focus mainly on movement and drama. Motion and mystery are something that deeply inspires me, and this theme can be seen throughout most of my works today.

Winter Diary

I never saw a more beautiful winter in Seoul than I did as I traveled with my sister and realized it was one of my favorite winters in my life.

My sister constantly reminded me not to eat too much airplane food. No matter what, do not eat it. that made it easy for me to not admit that I was anorexic and struggling after a suicide attempt…

I want my photographs to move people and let them travel to different places and experience moments in ways they otherwise might not. I want to call attention to how perspective changes from person to person and how to see that change.

About My Work

These pieces show the still and calm of winter and how snow and leaves cling to branches in the still of winter. They show a moment of peace in a time where so much is happening. Going out and taking these photos allowed me time to get out of my home and go do something, which seems to rarely happen during the current pandemic. A pandemic that has again proven the need for dismantling systemic racism, classism, sexism, and the intersections of these national issues. These issues are present and the need to acknowledge and change these systems must be advocated for. Still, there is a need to take care of yourself and allow a moment to breathe when we can. I want these pieces to help people take that moment of calm.

Artist Statement

Since retiring from a busy professional career, I have come to appreciate and express the artist that lay latent until now. It is immensely satisfying to have the time to realize my design ideas, investigations, and interpretations. I find my inspiration in places such as landscapes, architectural forms, my travels, and thoughts. My art is a result of a careful observation of the subjects and my personal expression of what I see and feel. I am always experimenting with light, colour, form, and texture. I enjoy people’s comments when viewing my artwork because everyone experiences it in his own way.

About My Work

When doing realistic paintings, I try to keep the realism of the situation intact but the colours and the design in the picture may appear different in my painting.

The inspiration for my abstract work mostly comes from my inner personal thoughts and feelings. Feelings that have been evoked by emotions and situations. Colour, form, values, and shapes play a major part in my paintings. They help me to express an emotion and/or thought. This way my painting communicates to the viewers. Most of the time I already see the painting in my mind before I put it on the canvas.

Organic forms immersed in indeterminate space populate my work. The content is inspired by natural structures and processes yet is abstracted and dereferenced in a manner that evades direct identification. There are allusions to both microscopic and macroscopic spaces, blurring the line between the two, creating environments that are both familiar and mysterious. This invites the viewer to contemplate similarities of form across scale and encourages a connection to the broader universe.

About My Work

My work is realized through an intricate combination of analog and digital media. I find the relationships between the material and algorithmic processes compelling and enjoy the discovery aspect of creating compositions from the emergent forms. Through this approach I’m seeking an inherently personal sense of balance between cerebral and physical; logical and emotional; control and chaos; intention and chance.

Artist Statement

I communicate my struggle to search for new alternatives and solutions to problems both in art and in the courtroom. This portfolio of work expresses my drive to always look at things in a new way. Art has become an outlet that has taken me on a journey that I share with the viewer through these works that are as intriguing to the mind as they are a delight to the eye.

About My Work

As an attorney, my experience is extensive, having practiced criminal defense law for more than 40 years. As an artist, I am self-taught and passionate.

My art reflects an intriguing attempt to combine my passion for law with my love for artistic expression through bold textures and vibrant colours. Dedicating over 40 years to building my legal skills, I explore my experiences in this field through introspection that is expressed in my series of original paintings entitled A Brush with the Law.

My emergence into art was paved by my spiritual teacher who emphasized creativity and the necessity of getting out of the way of one’s own head. I soon discovered that, even though I couldn’t sing or dance, I was intrigued by the use of colour and texture. Through meditation and keen observation, my creativity has blossomed.

A very absorptive surface, raw canvas propels me to create unpredictable, explosive, and vibrant results. I have also carried this exploration of surface to the use of silkscreens, requiring the application of paint from the back of the material, again producing unanticipated textures and formations as well as unique and dramatic results.

Colour dictates and controls not only what I paint but also the medium that I paint with. Pieces of discarded objects often magically find their way onto my canvas. Those objects call out to me for the colours that will convey their unique messages and emotions to the viewer.  They are as much a part of my art as the law is a part of my vocation.

My work reflects my never-ending search for new alternatives and solutions to problems both in art and in the courtroom. I am driven to always look at things in new ways and, if successful, my paintings can inspire others to do the same.

Artist Statement

Inspiration is a word that resembles inhalation and that is what moves me to write—I’ve “breathed in an experience” that makes me want to create an artistic equivalent of what moved me, thereby sharing it with others. As a reader, I often appreciate this gift when given to me by writers and they stimulate my desire to emulate good and even great literary work; the same was true in my photographic years.

About My Work

In any poem of mine that I value, there is always something “given” by what feels like an “other”—which is what made humans create the idea of a muse. My part in the transaction is to take what the muse gives me—typically a first line that comes unbidden into my mind—and see if I can follow it from there and arrive somewhere. When readers respond to something I’ve written, I feel completed and happy.
