Distance makes perception clearer – looking at something with a stranger’s eyes can present a new, unexpected perspective. That was proven by Chinese-born photographer Bin Feng, who turned the situation of the language barrier into the prolific instrument of his creative research.

The Passage

Sarah drove on in the quiet dark, hands clasped tightly to the wheel. Normally, she loved driving in these early morning hours. The houses as they slipped past all had an air of being tucked away, like children before Christmas morning. The sky above was a dark, comforting blanket. It lay over the city and in its confines, everything felt like a secret. A private, hidden fraternity in the shared quiet…

Art can be cathartic when words touch the deepest parts of our soul. A short story, “The Passage,” by Tamara Cline caught our eye with its sincere and touching tone. It reminds readers of the perplexing and fragile relationships we all have with our parents while growing up and rushing toward the Unknown.

As the saying goes, “Another man’s mind is a closed book.” But, too often, it’s our own essence that remains an enigma to us, and we shun looking inside our souls. Heidi Clapp-Temple isn’t the timid type, as she dares to penetrate into the invisible universe that lives inside our minds.

Tyson Foster

ArtAscent Artist of the Unknown call for artists

The future is undoubtedly the most mysterious aspect of our existence. Johann Paul Friedrich Richter once wrote, “The past and future are veiled; but the past wears the widow’s veil; the future, the virgin’s.” Glorifying future – trying to foresee it – has been one of the key issues of vanguard art.

View From a Train Window

Passing over the wild Mystic River in Connecticut, I note the seven story box factories with their broken windows competing for air space with wondrous pterodactyls soaring overhead. The great woolly mammoths sitting on their haunches watching six spangled bison leap in mating dances while naked men, beautiful as Botticelli angels cavorting among the waves, which roll and butt against the beach…

Mail-order Bride

Norman shaved off his beard and dressed in his new Kmart jeans, white Sunday shirt and blue necktie to meet her at the airport. He watched the arrivals board until her flight number flicked to “landed.” He breathed deeply, gazing around at the other people meeting friends and family. Looking down at his feet, he saw his mother hadn’t reminded him to change from his wellworn work boots into his dress shoes…

Beyond the Wall

The wall is a symbol of what was lost, a burden to bear at a great cost. The few who remain, try to withstand, surviving in a shadow that now covered the land. None dared approach the unending wall, it towered above, making everyone feel small. All who saw it, trembled at the size, if one could simply climb it, they could claim its hidden prize…

Downcast Eyes

She watched him from afar most of her life. Even in the beginning when they were so very close, he still seemed far away, as if from a different world. As children, she saw him as her weird best friend from the house on the hill, who brought a whole loaf of bread to their picnic and drank milk right from the carton, a stranger to the neatly packed lunch her own mum would make for her…
